Why does this site exist? #
Sometimes I think of things I want to say. I don’t particularly write for an audience, nor for a particular reason.

Molting Penguin? #
I was digging around some time ago and happened across BattleMidget. This was years and years ago, and I have no recollection of what it was about. For some reason this name stuck in my head, though. I started speculating on why this was, and realized (at least for me) that it was the dual-syllable words, accent on the same syllable.
(Hilariously, I happened across BattlePenguin.com when I was writing this.)
Years later, I’m looking for a domain (I collect them like navels collect lint), and I sat around thinking of this. I’m not big on battles, and I have no particular feelings one way or the other about little people. I do, however, have a love of Penguins. These flightless birds speak to me. They’re awkward on land, but in the sea they soar. I saw a picture (not the one I use on this site) of a young penguin, and realized MoltingPenguin had the same inflection. Good enough for me.
Moulting/Molting #
For <reasons>, I grew up using a lot of British spelling (to this day, out pops ‘honour’ instead of ‘honor’, ‘behaviour’ instead of ‘behavior’, and a few others, when I am touch typing). I’m never sure when to add that u after the o, and when not to.
I first registered moultingpenguin.com
. Then moltingpenguin.com
. For a while I used ‘molting’ for people I didn’t know, and ‘moulting’ for people I did, but I never did anything that differentiated them. Worse, someone was unable to distinguish the two, and handed out the domains to people willy-nilly, and soon there was no rhyme nor reason where mail was addressed to.
The Images #
While setting up this site, I was looking for a nice picture of a molting penguin. I found an excellent one on the Smithsonian website. But I figured “Better not rip off from a major, you know, organization”. So I searched for “molting penguin creative commons”. And found that very picture from the Smithsonian site on Wikimedia (Molting Emperor Penguin.jpg).
If it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for me.
When I converted the site to use Blowfish, I re-evaluated using an Author picture, because the “Hero” picture (that picture of the Molting Emperor Penguin) became the background of basically all my pages. So I added this image of an adult King Penguin at the Zurich Zoo (from flickr user Tambako the Tiger) as the Author image:
